Learning Through Connection: My Internship at BorneLund

In July 2026, I had the opportunity to intern with Future Education during their collaborative “Summer Art Session” at the BorneLund Roppongi Hills Store. The event brought children and parents together through games, crafts, and English activities focused on American summer culture. My role became more hands-on than I expected, giving me a meaningful introduction to early childhood mentorship and teamwork.

Stepping into an Unexpected Role

I originally expected to support the event behind the scenes, but I was asked to partner directly with a five-year-old participant who needed additional support. Since I had little experience working with young children, stepping into this role was both unexpected and exciting. I quickly adjusted and focused on helping her feel comfortable and engaged throughout the event.

Building Trust Through Games and Crafts

Throughout the day, I guided her through summer-themed games and activities while encouraging her participation. One of the most memorable moments was the “Friendship Gift” activity, where we made a beaded fish keychain together. Watching her carefully choose the colors and proudly show the finished keychain to her mother was especially rewarding and showed me how quickly trust can grow through shared experiences.

Navigating Challenges and Adapting Communication

Working one-on-one required me to stay attentive and adjust my communication when needed. I learned to speak more slowly, get down to her eye level, and use a mix of simple English and Japanese when she seemed unsure. I also became more aware of how facial expressions, body language, and enthusiasm can help create a welcoming environment for young children.

Reflections on Personal Growth

This internship pushed me outside my comfort zone and helped me develop stronger communication, adaptability, and mentorship skills. I learned that effective leadership is not only about managing activities, but also about understanding the needs of the person in front of you. The experience also confirmed how much I enjoy collaborative, people-focused work and gave me skills I hope to bring into future volunteer and leadership opportunities.
