Internship at Doggy's Island, a resort for dogs in Chiba, Japan

In summer 2026, I completed an internship at Doggy’s Island in Chiba, Japan. Before arriving, I expected most of my responsibilities to involve office work and assisting with guest check-ins. Instead, I found myself interacting with both customers and dogs throughout the resort, gaining firsthand experience in hospitality and customer service. The experience challenged me to step outside my comfort zone, develop stronger communication skills, and see how a business can successfully create a welcoming environment for both people and animals.

Connecting with Guests

One of my favorite areas was the lounge and cafe, where I assisted staff during busy service periods. I helped prepare and serve drinks, greeted guests, and observed how employees balanced efficiency with friendly customer interactions. What stood out to me was how much small details mattered. Staff members paid close attention to guests' needs and worked hard to create a positive atmosphere. I especially enjoyed making and serving drinks because it gave me a sense of accomplishment and allowed me to interact with customers in a relaxed setting.

Stepping Outside My Comfort Zone

Working at the front desk pushed me the furthest outside my comfort zone. I learned the importance of maintaining a professional smile, greeting guests confidently, and making a strong first impression. I also observed the detailed procedures involved in the check-in process, including verifying vaccination records to ensure the safety of both dogs and their owners. When I encountered questions I could not immediately answer, I sometimes hesitated, but the staff encouraged me to ask for help and reassured me that learning through mistakes was part of the experience. Their support helped me become more comfortable communicating with unfamiliar people.

Understanding Doggy's Island's Unique Approach

Doggy’s Island is unique because it places dogs at the center of the guest experience. Throughout the resort, dogs are welcomed into spaces that are often off-limits elsewhere, including restaurants and hotel rooms. As a dog lover, I enjoyed observing how carefully the staff looked after the animals' well-being. I was impressed by the attention given to safety, cleanliness, and comfort, as well as the many opportunities designed for dogs and owners to enjoy activities together. Seeing this level of care helped me understand how the resort creates memorable experiences for both its human and canine guests.

Personal Growth and Lasting Lessons

This internship taught me that hospitality depends on much more than simply completing tasks. A positive attitude, strong communication, and attention to detail all contribute to how guests perceive their experience. I learned that facial expressions and greetings can shape first impressions, and that being willing to ask questions is an important part of providing good service. Most importantly, I gained confidence interacting with customers and developed a greater appreciation for the work involved in caring for both people and animals. The lessons I learned at Doggy’s Island will be valuable in future customer-facing roles and any opportunities involving animal care.
